Terrence Jones has officially made the announcement that he is coming back to UK. He just tweeted the following statement: I've been enjoying being a college player & plan on striving to reach my goal of winning #8 here at UK. I can't leave the BBN just yet.
Liggins is expected to say the same thing tomorrow once his workout is finished, unless he receives surprising news that a team is willing to draft him in the 1st round.
The team is likely still unfinished. Trevor Lacey is set to make his announcement at his school on Wednesday May 18th. Lacey moved into five star status in the latest Rivals ranking who put him at #24.
Lacey is expected to pick UK on the 18th not expecting to see a whole lot of playing time his freshman year but quite aware of the situation the following season.
There is the possibility of the two and through rule not happening all together or happening but not starting until the following 2012 class. If the 2012 class is the first class to be affected then Gilchrist and Davis can be one and done, who are projected as lottery picks.
If this was to happen look at who all is likely gone after this next season: Jones, Lamb, Davis, Gilchrist all leaving early with the possibility of Teague as well. I personally believe Teague because of his size and being a more pass first type point guard is at least a two year player but when it comes to Cal you never know. No one saw Bledsoe and Orton being drafted first round after one season.
Coach Cal is a double edge sword. He is great at recruiting because of his ability to develop players at a quick rate. The bad side for UK fans is this means players don’t stay as long as they would if they went elsewhere. It also attracts the type of players that want to be in the NBA yesterday.
Then you have Miller, Liggins, and Vargas leaving after their senior year.
So we are looking at 7 to 8 guys leaving after this upcoming season. This will be breaking more NBA draft history. Likely a few of those will be 2nd round picks but we are looking at roughly 5 more first round picks with two 2nd round picks.
Now this is one loaded team but Coach Cal is thinking past this upcoming season. With our current roster, the following season we are looking at a return of SR Hood, JR Poole, and two preferred walk ons in JR Polson, and JR Beckham.
This is where Lacey comes into play. Lacey knows him in his sophomore season would have plenty of playing time because of this.
Ryan Harrow is still a possibility as well. He would take the 13th scholarship spot putting Polson and Beckham as walk ons. Polson and Beckham only take scholarship spots if there happens to be one that would just be going to waste.
Coach Cal tends to not use all 13 scholarships because a smaller team causes less playing time issues with players and better chemistry. After this past season depth issues and 7 to 8 guys leaving after this year has changed his strategy.
If we get Lacey and Harrow, then we are looking at a return of Hood, Poole, Lacey, Harrow, Polson, Beckham and possibly Teague to go along with the 2012 freshman class.
Enjoy Derby Weekend! I'm going with Staying Thirsty, my wife is going for Pants on Fire. Who do you got?
