Wednesday Updates on the NBA Draft
For what is the weakest NBA draft in likely the history of the modern draft...it is one that continues to be filled with potential twist.
There are multiple teams attempting trades connected with the draft. One including Patterson potentially going to the Bucks.
It has also came out today that the Cavs have not guaranteed Irving the first pick and that the Timberwolves may be falling for Kanter at #2 instead of Williams from Arizona.
The fact the Timberwolves are showing love towards Kanter may actually put the Cavs concerned about taking Irving number one. They wanted Kanter at number 4 but if he isn't there that may force them to choose Kanter first if they really like him and then get a good guard that will be left at #4. There will be good point guards available at #4 including Knight. On the other hand you take Irving at 1, there will not be a good post player like Kanter available at #4 if Kanter is take at 2 or 3.
This may just be a front put on by the Cavs. Cleveland may have already told Irving that he is their guy but publicly saying otherwise. It isn't smart for the Cavs to put all the cards on the table.
The Cavs are not likely to get anyone to bite but it is possible by keeping their pick secret, they may be able to get something for nothing. For example lets say the Cavs want to take Irving but they keep that to themselves. Then lets say the Timberwolves really want Kanter or Williams. If the Cavs make the Timberwolves uneasy about them possibly taking "their guy" at #1 they may be willing to trade their 1/2 picks for something extra. Minnesota has the 20th pick in the draft. I'm sure the Cavs would love to trade their 1 pick for the 2nd and 20th pick. I doubt the Timberwolves would give that much up. They also do not have a 2nd round pick to trade but Minnesota could give up their 2nd round pick for the next draft for this trade.
This would allow the Cavs to be given something for doing nothing. They would end up still getting the player they wanted at #2 and get an extra something as well. It isn't likely but this is the potential benefit of not showing your cards.
There is definitely some chess moves in play. Will anything interesting happen with it or is it all just talk? We shall see...
