DeAndre Daniels Update

Evan Daniels reported earlier that Daniels would not be announcing today.  Reports from several sites believe there will not be a public decision until Monday.

I can tell you the UK coaching staff believe Daniels is coming to UK.  Now of course you can take that with a grain of salt because Texas and Kansas coaching staff may or may not believe the same thing.  It does tell us that Daniels has not informed UK as of Saturday night that he is choosing elsewhere...

It may be a blessing in disguise for Daniels to not make a public announcement at this point.  He is just now coming off a visit to Texas and the last thing we want him to do is make an emotional decision based upon his Texas visit.  The more time he has away from Austin, the better UK's chances.
How important Daniels is still up in the air. He is a top ten player and will get to come to UK a semester early.  This will allow him a head start on understanding Cal's system and the college game in general.  On the other hand, we potentially could be very deep next year if Kanter comes back and depending on who decks for the NBA.  That being the case Daniels will likely see a ton of minutes as a freshman.

Cal is trying to sell him to be very important for UK in his second year.  He likes Daniels better than players at his position in the 2012 class and Daniels could give the team some added experience.

With Daniels commitment this likely means there will not be room for Trevor Lacey.  Lacey is an outstanding scorer but not crazy athletic.  Which basically means he fits into the college game well and wouldn't likely be one and done.

Lacey was considered to be a higher priority than Daniels but Daniels coming a semester early seem to be the selling point for Cal over Lacey.

There may end up being room for Lacey but this would mean bad news for UK.  For there to be room that means Jones, Knight, Kanter and Lamb will be gone or a transfer.  Poole and Hood are both very happy at UK at this point.  They believe they will be an important factor for UK in Hood's senior season and Poole's junior season.

  1. Actually, only two of the four mentioned above would have to declare early. We have 11 players on scholarship right now, though we really have 10 since Polson is a walk-on. This gives us 4 scholarships to work with, as Harrellson is graduating.
