A hot topic around UK fans right now is Anthony Davis vs. Quincy Miller. Both are hot recruits UK is after in the 2011 class. Fans want to know who is the better choice if we can only have one and who does UK want.
Let's break them down, then give a little insight into who the UK staff seems to prefer.

Anthony Davis:
ESPN Analysis: a very talented power forward that posses great length and skill. He runs the floor with long strides that lead to easy baskets. Davis finishes above the rim on the break and when he receives drop off passes created by dribble penetration.
He has great hands and can turn a bad pass into points. Davis displayed scoring ability comfortably to about 18 feet on the perimeter where he knocked down the trail shot on the break or pick and popped after setting an on ball screen. In the post Davis has trouble holding his position due to his lack of strength but his length makes it almost impossible for his shot to be contested to the point that it bothers him.
Davis elevates over defenders with his turn shot or he can face and make a move off the dribble. He is a match up nightmare for less mobile or smaller post players. He provides the passer with a target hand and he has a great feel for where the rim is located and his defender when his back is to the basket.
On the glass he can rebound in and out of his area with length not strength and Davis does a great job on the offensive glass with athletic tip ins and second effort shots because his second jump is as quick as his first. Davis rebounds with two hands at rim level and snaps the outlet pass or he can lead the break with a bust out dribble.
He is an alert defender as well that protects the basket with his ability to change and block shots. Davis is a special talent that is very smooth and very productive.
Quincy Miller:ESPN Analysis: The versatile athlete is at his best when he utilizes the entire floor to score the ball. Miller has all the tools to produce a double-double every time he steps on the floor.
He is very good at grabbing a defensive rebound and taking a bust out dribble to lead the fast break .Behind the arc, he shoots the ball with confidence and you can tell he has spent time working on his 3-point shot.
He demonstrates excellent vision and a willingness to make an assist. Drives opponents into the paint and scores with his natural ability and instincts. He can hurt defenses in the paint area at the mid/low block with his footwork, length and soft touch.
Defensively, he blocks shots to get the transition game going. His overall body strength will continue to improve, but he needs to give a consistent effort at all times.
So who is the best? It is clear that Rivals, Scout and ESPN all agree that currently Quincy Miller is the better player. This does not mean that Miller will clearly be the best college player or best NBA player. They are to close together for anyone to predict that.
It is possible that both could coexist at UK. That of course is a cop out answer and people want to know, if UK can only take one because of room or they don't want to coexist; who does UK want more?
The surprise answer to many UK fans is Anthony Davis. Quincy Miller has been tied to the UK program for quite sometime and with him running around wearing UK gear, he has become a fan favorite. Not to mention we are battling rivals Louisville and Duke for his services. If it is a fan vote, Quincy Miller wins hands down.
So why does the coaching staff prefer Davis over Miller? It comes down to who fits UK's needs the most. Davis wants to play the post and Miller wants to play on the wing. With the talent that will be around them, a post player fills a bigger need for UK.
Both would be great at UK and I hope we can land them both, but if the staff had to choose they would take Davis...not because of talent but because of the higher need for a talented post player in this class.
I actually think most fans prefer Davis. Many are saying that he will be the #1 player in the nation when the new rankings are released.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people don't know a whole lot about Davis and a lot of people just look at the current rankings and know Miller has been in the picture for awhile.
ReplyDeleteDavis excites me a little more then Miller does but I'm a sucker for the enforcer types of guys.
I will be happy with either. I feel as if Davis is better. However, if we get MIller we get both his game and steer him clear of Louisville. We would probably also get deuce bello, who is very underrated.
ReplyDeleteit seems to me that with the loss of so many bigger post players that Davis would be the better fit. Although he may lack strength now he can develop that which i think in the end would make him a better college player than Miller.
