-Not a whole lot of legit UK news to post as of late, hence no recent post...I try to avoid the "fluff" as much as possible...there are plenty of sites for that sort of thing.
The little news as of late:
-The Cal to the NBA rumors is complete bogus according to anyone I know close to the situation. This is being put out by those who benefit from seeing Cal lose out in recruiting. It helps make recruits question coming here. If he did that, he would shock anyone who has any true insight into the situation from Cal's side.
Cal did not like the NBA because his fate was out of his hands. You have by far less control over your own fate. He mentioned over the summer that in college if a player tries to cause drama, you can warn him, then bench him and then send him packing. In the NBA you play him play him play him and then hope to trade him. Anytime the NBA is brought up from him it isn't in a positive light. The only way he ever does that is when he is overly sick of being on the recruiting trail and he would be fine with retiring if the NBA job didn't work out.
-There are also rumors assistant coach Kenny Payne was hired by UK. This would be impossible without an assistant job being open and although one of the assistant jobs could open, at this point it isn't true. Payne is considered by many to be a great recruiter.
I do not know him personally and if those with true insight claim he is a great recruiter then it's worth trusting but I have to question on what basis can you claim this? He was hired in 2004 and along with this hire also came a great recruiting class with a 5 star in Malik Hairston and two 4 stars. It's hard to believe he had a lot to do with this class with most of the recruiting year over before he was on his his first day in the office. Hairston was a late signing and surprised the world by picking Oregon, so he may have had some pull on him...
Since the 2004 class, Oregon has had only two four star recruits and no 5 star. Of course you can argue that it's Oregon, which is harder to recruit to then Kentucky...despite the Oregon/Nike ties. So I can't argue that he isn't a great recruiter but I'm not sure on what basis people are saying he is, the numbers don't seem to show this.
-Rumors Vargas may be coming to UK. UK has interest in him and think he would be an ok recruit to pick up but grades are an issue and UK has no idea if he will be eligible. He does not look to be a recruit UK would be interested in if he has to burn another year in juco. He has already given up two years of eligibility by playing/riding the pine at Florida and his year at juco.
Vargas worked out at UK this past summer and UK went away not impressed. He showed potential as a kid coming out of high school not a guy who had already spent a year in college...he has since done well at the juco level and UK needs some guys to plug up our lack of depth issues for this upcoming season, knowing the following season we will be stacked once again. Vargas would fill this but not hog up a spot for four years like some of these other recruits would.
