In all seriousness UK comes in with a 29-2 record, only loses on the road at South Carolina and at Tennessee. Alabama is coming in 17-14 and unless they win the SEC tourney title, they are hoping for a NIT bid at best. Most UK fans expected South Carolina to get the job done and pull out the win. Today, South Carolina was up 54-36 with 11:40 in the game. I believe if South Carolina just sits back and holds the ball for 30 seconds or more on each play, they walk away with the win...but that didn't happen. Alabama put it on and finally took the lead 60-59 with 2 minutes left. A 23-6 run...South Carolina tied it up with 1:18 left but S.C. could only score one free throw the rest of the way and they went down 68-63.
The question remains does this game allow Alabama to come in with some momentum or does UK see they can not sleep on Alabam and comes in ready to play.
UK beat Bama at Rupp Feb. 9th in what many described as a snoozer. Bama has a way of slowing the game down as much as they possibly can and UK seemed content with just scrapping by with the win. UK put up 16 turnovers and shot 3-16 from three.
UK has won 25 SEC tournament titles but no one currently with the team has ever won one. UK hasn't won the SEC tournament since 2004. Last time we won it in Nashville was 2001. We beat Ole Miss 77-55 in the championship.
Cal continues to say it isn't about the SEC title but making sure we have a number one seed in the NCAA tournament. The problem is, even if we go out and lay an egg tomorrow, we will not only still be a number one seed but we are set to be a number one seed in the east.
Patterson had this to say, "Cal says we need two (wins), but we want to win three. We want to win the championship and have that as an accomplishment under our belts that we can look back on and say 'We did that.'"
