This is a great get for UK. He is a versatile center which fits perfectly in Cal's Dribble Drive Offense.
He has been projected as a possibly lottery pick after his first season.
There is talk that Orton will be leaving for the NBA after this season since his draft stock has went way up. NBA draft experts are projecting him around 17th or so in the draft.
If Cousins and Orton go, we are looking at Harrelson being the only returning post player.
There are some issues with his eligibility because he played on a team in Turkey along with players who were paid. This is a NCAA no even if he personally was not paid.
The NCAA has never been known to be consistent. This was shown when Duke's player was found to have been paid by an agent or someone representing an agency while still playing at Duke. Duke received no games stripped despite NCAA stripping UMASS' and Memphis Final Four for playing what the NCAA considered to be ineligible players.
This past season the ACC had a similar situation dealing with a Euro recruit who had played on a team with paid players and the NCAA required him to sit out half the season.
Some believe Cal was not going to offer Kanter until it was clear he would be ok with the NCAA but that may have been just wishful thinking.
Either way, we will need him next season even if Orton does stick around.
